The Portal

Wallpaper* magazine invited visitors of Milan Design Week to their exhibition and showcase of creativity and collaboration, Holy Handmade! The exhibition was promised to be a truly elevating experience, featuring names like Ronan & Erwan BouroullecTom Dixon and Yves Béhar.

For the occasion, Wallpaper* paired Snøhetta, Everything Elevated and Erik Jørgensen Møbelfabrikk—resulting in a stairway to heaven-illusion, a ladder called 'The Portal'.

"The installation Portal is the result of a holistic approach combined with a variety of creative disciplines that are blended together, resulting in a one-of-a-kind installation," explained Stian Rossi, Architect March Snøhetta.

The ladder is made of solid oak wood that has been stained black and upholstered with Cohiba leather. The stitching is black to match the leather but still a very dominant feature of the piece. At each end of the ladder are two round podiums clad with mirrors, making the ladder seem never-ending.

"The installation has been carefully curated as a monolithic piece that invites the spectator to observe it from different perspectives, from a distance in the architectural space of Santa Teresa Mediatheque in Milan to the closest detail of the high-quality leather stitching," explained Rossi.
